Located in a former fort oak showroom in the upscale, passer-by-friendly Mission Hills area, Fort Oak is divided into four unmistakable dining spaces. They are all one-of-a-kind, while still sticking to a sleek, modern theme: hexagonal decorative tiles, light bulb shades and metal accents. A separate drink and large dining bar occupies the first showroom space; the basic lounge area houses the show kitchen; and two porches, both ready for viewing.
How is the fort oak?
You’ll track foodies of all ages, from young experts to retirement-age locals. It’s a trendy, happening, and occasionally sensational group.
What is a good idea for us to drink?
There are almost all kinds of refreshments here. Looking for a soul to move forward? Try the Roadmaster, Fort Oak’s take on old school. Luxury stuff renaissance? We love Fairlaine made with gin, grapefruit and prosecco. There’s also a whole section of martinis, low-strength mixed drinks, wine, beer, soulless mixed drinks. During weekday party times, draft beer is $6, select wines are $7, and select mixed drinks are $8.
Title: Food. Give us the inside scoop – especially not to be missed.
Similar to the ludicrous Trust Cafe near Hillcrest, head culinary expert and partner Brad Wise and his team center on natural wood dishes. The proof lies in the uniquely made 7,000-pound barbecue used to cook branzino, a roasted cauliflower with a ripe chile aioli, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Crude Bar is one of the few puts on the menu that isn’t charred.
Here you can settle mollusks on half shells or scallop aguachile. While Fort Oak has many meat and fish options, plant-based burger joints have plenty of options, usually in small plates. Remember that paying $6 for meat and potatoes might sound extreme, ask for sourdough with homemade sauce and thank us later. Also, don’t miss dessert. Good chef Jeremy Harville, who leads baking, works his magic with sugar, whether it’s a brioche or a chocolate mousse cake with rice pretzel “soil.”
What’s more, how did the people at the front desk treat you?
Thanks to partner Steven Schwob — who worked at big-name cafes in San Francisco and Las Vegas before arriving in San Diego — and director Sophia Hussain, the place is like Works like clockwork. The waiters are attentive, understanding and knowledgeable.
What’s the truth about what we’re here to do?
Despite its modern menu and modern design, Fort Oak is still a basic local cafe. That means you’ll see everything from easy weeknight dinners to birthdays and commemorative festivities. If you feel daring, book the Chef’s Experience, where you can watch Wise and his team create a six-course tasting menu ($100 per person) on the fly.
